According to France’s Sports Minister David Douillet, the comeback of the French Grand Prix is still well on track. The last Formula 1 race in the country was hosted on Circuit de Magny-Cours in 2008. Recently, plans emerged to get the race back on the calendar, but on another circuit (Paul Ricard Circuit). Reports stated that the race could already be back by September 2013, but as lately news about the race has gone quiet, many thought the event will not go ahead after all.
Douillet has again confirmed that the plans are still well on track, saying France is still in negotiation with Belgium to share the Grand Prix with them. This plan is to the dislike of many Formula 1 fans as the Belgian Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps is one of the favorites on the Formula 1 calendar.
Douillet said: “We will have three French drivers in F1 so we have to have French Grand Prix. It is my role to make sure we have a Grand Prix in France. I met Bernie Ecclestone and he was willing to share the Grand Prix between Belgium and France. He has mobilized and motivated local governments for the financing of the event.”
“We have yet to really put ourselves in agreement with our Belgian friends (including the promoter of the Belgian GP Etienne Davignon) and there are also some details with one or two cities about finances. We are almost there.”
