Today, 6 February 2012, is exactly one year since Robert Kubica’s horrific crash in the Ronde di Andorra Rally. The unfortunate Formula 1 driver ran into a guardrail and was left severely injured. He was forced to miss the entire 2011 season and the start of this season. Whether and when he will be able to race again is still uncertain.
The driver required about four long surgeries on his shoulder, leg, hand and elbow with the first one taking about seven hours. In April he was released from the hospital and started his rehabilitation program, but had to return in August for a final surgery on his elbow. He is currently still rehabilitating, but last month he was again the victim of bad luck. When walking to his house in Italy, he slipped and fell on the icy road. As a result, he reopened the old wounds on his leg again which was still in the process of recovery since his rally crash. However, his doctors said that despite this setback, he is still recovering very well.
Lately there have been a lot of rumors about Kubica returning to Formula 1 with Ferrari instead of with Renault. While Renault Team Principal Eric Boullier stated that his team would support Kubica in his return to the sport and contract him for the 2013 season, he was very disappointed with the rumors and said not to help the driver if he returns with another team. While Ferrari has denied that they have shown interest in the driver, the latest rumors state that the team will help him in the final phase of his recovery and grant him a test drive in a Ferrari F1 car in June this year.
